- 12 cups cubed day-old French or sourdough bread
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup finely chopped onions
- 1 cup finely chopped celery
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon dried sage
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 2–3 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread cubed bread on a baking sheet and toast for 10–15 minutes until golden brown.
- In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Sauté onions and celery until softened (about 5 minutes). Stir in garlic, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper; cook until fragrant.
- In a large bowl, combine toasted bread with the sautéed mixture. Add enough broth to moisten (start with 2 cups) and mix in beaten eggs.
- Transfer to a greased baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes; remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
