  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for hot fudge sauce)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (for hot fudge sauce)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (for hot fudge sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for hot fudge sauce)
  • Vanilla ice cream, as desired (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract until blended.
  4. Mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients; gradually stir in hot water until smooth.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes until a skewer comes out clean. Cool for 15 minutes.
  6. For hot fudge sauce, combine cocoa powder, sugar, milk, and butter in a saucepan over medium heat until boiling. Reduce to low and simmer for 1 minute; stir in vanilla.
